Jedes Jahr gibt es Meldungen über Algenblüten, die Fische, Menschen und sogar ganze Ökosysteme in Gefahr bringen können. Giftige Algenblüten treten in den letzten Jahren gehäuft auf und bewirken wirtschaftliche Schäden, beispielsweise an Muschel- und Fischzuchten oder auch im Tourismus.
Referent ist Dr. Uwe John, Alfred-Wegener-Institut (Sektion Chemische Ökologie); er erforscht seit mehreren Jahren giftige Algen.
