Snowball Earth 2006

The Snowball Earth hypothesis is one of the most controversial research topics in the geological sciences. The existence of low-latitude glaciation during the Terminal Proterozoic is not a new concept, however the possibility that the evolution of 'complex' multicellular organisms could have been initiated by an environmental catastrophe on the scale of global or near-global glaciation has spurred research in many fields. The conference in Ascona is the first international conference entirely dedicated to the discussion of the current status of the Snowball Earth hypothesis.

The format of the conference will take the form of oral and poster presentations, break-out groups and round table discussions, with plenty of time for social gatherings and informal meetings. A document will summarize the main conclusions of the meeting. It will cover all areas of relevant research including glacial sedimentology, chemostratigraphy, palaeoceanography, numerical climate modeling, geochronology, palaeomagnetism and palaeogeography, geodynamics, tectonics, palaeontology and molecular biogeochemistry.

Information on participating / attending:
Due to restrictions on numbers as a result of the availability of accommodation, attendance at the conference will be by written invitation from the organizing committee only.

Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
