Professor Jörn Eckert studierte, promovierte und habilitierte sich an der CAU. 1991 bis 1997 war er Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Europäische Rechtsgeschichte an der Universität Potsdam, bis er im April 1997 den Ruf seiner Alma Mater auf den Lehrstuhl für Deutsche und Europäische Rechtsgeschichte, Bürgerliches Recht und Handelsrecht annahm. Von Juli 2000 bis Juni 2002 war er Dekan der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät und trat im Juni 2004 das Amt des Rektors der Landesuniversität an. Er wurde im Juli 2005 zum Gründungsmitglied der Hamburger Akademie der Wissenschaften ernannt.
