Die mit 12.500 € dotierte Auszeichnung wird dem Preisträger am Montag, den 22. Mai 2006 auf dem Saarbrücker Campus übergeben.
Professor Schnick ist der erste Wissenschaftler, der mit dem Horst-Dietrich-Hardt-Preis ausgezeichnet wird. Er erhält den Preis für die Entwicklung neuer Leuchtstoffe, die unter anderem zur industriellen Anwendung hoch effizienter, warmweißer Leuchtdioden, der LEDs, geführt haben. Diese Arbeit gilt als Meilenstein bei der Entwicklung von LEDs für allgemeine Beleuchtungsanwendungen.
Der Preis, der zukünftig alle drei Jahre vergeben werden soll, ist nach dem Wissenschaftler Dr. Horst-Dietrich Hardt benannt, der bis zum Jahr 1982 an der Universität des Saarlandes als Professor für Anorganische Chemie tätig war. Hardt wurde 1917 in Brüssel geboren. Im Anschluss an sein Chemiestudium in Heidelberg war Hardt ab 1950 zunächst als Assistent und seit 1963 als außerplanmäßiger Professor am Chemischen Institut der Universität des Saarlandes tätig. Das kinderlose Ehepaar Hardt stellte seinen Nachlass für die Elisabeth- und Prof. Dr. Horst-Dietrich Hardt-Stiftung zu Verfügung.
