The Italian National Elections of 2006 in Historical Perspective

Lecture by Paul Ginsborg, Professor of Contemporary European History at the Università di Firenze, Introduction: Jürgen Kocka, WZB

This year's national elections in Italy were particularly important and fascinating for two reasons. First, Silvio Berlusconi has introduced the element of menace to the Italian democratic system, notably through his use of television and consumerism as well as through his repeated attacks on the judiciary. Second, the elections reveal how unchanging many voting patterns and regional loyalties in Italy are, and how much older structures of consent and belief continue to play a primary role in Italian politics. This lecture intends to examine both propositions and to explore their relation to one another.

Paul Ginsborg (born in London in 1945) has taught history and politics at the University of Cambridge for many years before taking up his present post as Professor of Contemporary European History in the Facoltà di Lettere, Università di Firenze in 1992. Amongst his principal publications are: A History of Contemporary Italy (Penguin, 1990); Italy and its Discontents (Penguin, 2001); Berlusconi. Television, Power and Patrimony (Verso, 2004, German translation: Berlusconi. Politisches Modell der Zukunft oder italieni-scher Sonderweg?, Wagenbach, 2005), and The Politics of Everyday Life (Yale University Press, 2005). In 2002, Paul Ginsborg was co-founder of an influential civil society group; the Florentine Laboratory for Democracy.
