Special colloqium on the occasion of 10th anniversary of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences

New Materials from Mathematics: Real and Imagined

Can mathematics be used to discover materials? The answer is "yes" in a few cases, and theory developed at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences has played an important role. We discuss some examples, then look to the future. We theorize about whether there might be a common mathematical ramework for discovering new materials of the type that are under such intense study today: carbon nanotubes, buckyballs, the capsids and tails of viruses, and many structures now being synthesized by the methods of nanotechnology.
