Professor Marotzke gilt als einer der international anerkanntesten Experten auf dem Gebiet der Erforschung der Wechselwirkungen zwischen Ozeanen und dem Klima. Das von Prof. Jochem Marotzke am Max-Planck-Institut für Meteorologie geleitete Forscherteam hat ein Klimamodell entwickelt, in welchem die Entwicklung und Stabilität der atlantischen Umwälzbewegung unter globaler Erwärmung untersucht wird. Damit wird es möglich, die Veränderung der atlantischen Umwälzbewegung abzuschätzen, die im 21. Jahrhundert als Folge des anthropogenen Klimawandels um mehr als 30 Prozent abnehmen könnte. In dem Vortrag wird Jochem Marotzke u.a. darstellen, welche Auswirkungen sich aus einer möglichen Abschwächung des Golfstroms für das Klima Europas ergeben können.
Die Vorlesung "Global Challenges: Klimawandel" ist eine gemeinsame Veranstaltung der Studienschwerpunkte Umweltwissenschaften, Technologie und internationale Entwicklung, Nachhaltige Gestaltung von Technik und Wissenschaft sowie Biotechnik.
