The part of the Enlightenment which pushed for full freedom of thought, personal liberty and religious freedom together with democracy and equality is now called by historians the Radical Enlightenment. In the early part of its development from around 1660 down to the 1750s, the Radical Enlightenment was not yet considered a major public threat by churches and kings because it spread only by means of underground networks, small numbers of manuscripts and clandestinely printed books. After around 1770 however its penetration of European society and culture became so extensive that more conservative 'enlighteners', that is thinkers and rulers who endorsed some Enlightenment ideas and toleration but were also, intent on defending monarchy, aristocracy and ecclesiastical authority ( for the masses at least) took fright and began to concentrate their efforts on fighting radical ideas. Among those who were most active and eloquent in their efforts to defeat radical thought were Frederick the Great and his ally Voltaire.
