Bekannte Standards sind MPEG-1 (wird für Video-CDs verwendet) einschließlich MP3 (Komprimierung von Musik), MPEG-2 (DVD, DVB-T) und AVC/H.264 (Flashplayer, HDTV). Fachleute arbeiten derzeit an neuen Standards unter anderem im Bereich Audio mit Schwerpunkt Mehrkanalton und im Bereich Video mit Fokus auf Fernsehen in 3D. Dabei geht es um Schnittstellen zwischen virtuellen Welten und der realen Welt für das Fernsehen der Zukunft, dass auch die Beleuchtung, Wind und Duft kontrolliert. Die Moving Picture Expertes Group (MPEG) trifft sich nun zum zweiten Mal in Hannover. Das Institut für Informationsverarbeitung der Leibniz Universität Hannover hat zu der Konferenz rund 200 Expertinnen und Experten aus 20 Ländern eingeladen.
