1793 mußte Thomas Thorild Schweden verlassen. Zwei Jahre später fand er eine Anstellung an der Universität Greifswald, wo er als Hochschullehrer und Bibliothekar arbeitete. Er schrieb weiterhin auf Schwedisch, verfasste aber auch philosophischen Schriften auf Latein und Deutsch, die Themen der Ästhetik, der politischen Philosophie und der Erkenntnistheorie behandeln.
Das Symposium widmet sich aus Anlass von Thorilds 200. Todestag dem Wirken und Schaffen dieses prominenten schwedischen Aufklärers in Greifswald und der besonderen Rolle, die Thorild für den Dialog zwischen Pommern und Schweden im 18. Jahrhundert gespielt hat.
