Er ist einer der führenden Interpreten der authentischen Stilarten des Banjos als typisch afro-amerikanischem Instrument: Clarke Buehling. Auf Einladung von Prof. Dr. Klaus Martens (Lehrstuhl für Nordamerikanische Literatur und Kultur) tritt der Musiker am 28. April an der Universität des Saarlandes auf.
Im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert wurde das 5-seitige Banjo populär, es kam in vielen Shows, Orchestern, Theatern und Banjo-Clubs zum Einsatz. Dadurch verschmolzen afrikanische und europäische (vor allem anglo-keltische) Musikkulturen und bildeten die Grundlage für die entstehende Populärmusik in Amerika. Clarke Buehling präsentiert ein reichhaltiges Repertoire an Instrumental- und Gesangsstücken aus dieser Zeit, dazu gehören Jubas, Rags, Märsche, Schottische, Galopp und Waltzer
Der Musiker wuchs in Chicago auf und lebt in Arkansas. Er spielt und unterrichtet zahlreiche Folkinstrumente arbeitete die frühe Geschichte des Banjo auf. Buehling baut selbst Instrumente nach alten Plänen nach und half, das öffentliche Interesse an den Frühformen der Banjomusik wieder zu erwecken.
