Der in diesem Jahr mit einer Alexander von Humboldt-Professur ausgezeichnete und nun in Bonn arbeitende Astrophysiker Norbert Langer spricht über die Orts- und Zeitmessung von James Cook bis heute und erklärt die Funktion und Bedeutung der verschiedenen astronomischen Methoden.
Die Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Bonn zeigt vom 28. August 2009 bis 28. Februar 2010 die Ausstellung "James Cook und die Entdeckung der Südsee". Für das Rahmenprogramm hat die Humboldt-Stiftung als Kooperationspartner von ihr geförderte Wissenschaftler eingeladen, ihre Forschung zu relevanten Themen der Ausstellung in Vorträgen zu präsentieren.
