In Ökotopia, das im Jahr 1999 spielt, plädiert Callenbach für nachhaltiges Wirtschaften durch wohl bedachten Einsatz umweltfreundlicher Technik. Der utopische Roman hatte großen Einfluss auf ökologische Bewegungen in der ganzen Welt.
Ernest Callenbach wurde am 3. April 1929 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania geboren. Er studierte an der University of Chicago sowie an der Sorbonne in Paris. Callenbach arbeitete danach als Lektor bei der University of California Press in Berkeley. Er war Herausgeber der renommierten Zeitschrift Film Quarterly (1958 - 1991), der Reihe California Natural History sowie vieler Kunstbücher und wissenschaftlicher Publikationen.
