In his presentation, Professor Ilan Alon examines how country-level, industry-level, and firm-level factors affect the extent of corporate communications about CSR in Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC). Using data from the 105 largest MNCs in BRIC, Ilan Alon gives insights on how CSR motives, processes, and stakeholder issues are discussed in corporate communications. He shows that the country's governance environment is the most important driving force behinds CSR communications intensity. Generally speaking, firms communicating more CSR tend to be larger firms in the manufac-turing industry in more rule-based societies. These firms also tend to have stronger corporate govern-ance as measured by a high proportion of outside board directors and a separation of the roles of the chairman and the CEO.
Ilan Alon focuses his research on China' s economic globalization, Christoph Lattemann's research concentrates on cooperate governance in international comparative perspectives. Margot Schueller is Senior Research Fellow at GIGA/IAS with a special focus on China's economic development.
