Prof. Drell war Direktor des großen Teilchenbeschleunigers Stanford Linear Accelerator Center und hat das Center for International Security and Cooperation der Stanford University mit gegründet und geleitet (http://cisac.stanford.edu/people/sidneyddrell/).
In den letzten Jahren hat er die Initiative von drei früheren US-Außen- bzw. Verteidigungsministern und einem Senator (Shultz, Perry, Kissinger, Nunn, Wall Street Journal Jan. 2007, Jan. 2008, http://online.wsj.com/article/SB116787515251566636.html und http://online.wsj.com/public/article_print/SB120036422673589947.html) zu einer Welt ohne Kernwaffen mit angestoßen und begleitet. Der erste Artikel ging auf eine Konferenz zurück, die von G.P. Shultz und S. Drell in Stanford veranstaltet wurde.
