Medien werden als Mittel zur Überbrückung von räumlicher und sozialer Distanz beschrieben. Die Leistungen und Effekte neuer Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien werden in Bezug auf die Überwindung des Raumes verhandelt. Nähe steht für die gelungene Vermittlung, zugleich bildet sie den unhinterfragt positiven Ausgangspunkt der Überbrückung von Distanz: Mediale Kommunikationsprozesse sollen Akteure zusammenbringen und für eine bessere, demokratischere und gerechtere Gesellschaft sorgen.
Die Sektionen fragen: Welche Rolle spielen Medien in den Aushandlungsprozessen von Nähe? Inwieweit wird Nähe von einem personalen/technischen/medialen Zentrum aus entworfen und bestimmt? Wie hat sich Distanz durch Technik und Medien verändert? Welche Rolle spielt die Grenze im Kontext einer Abgrenzung des Selbst von Nachbarschaften und (Online-)Communities und mit welchen methodologischen Ansätzen lässt sich das (opake) Konzept Nähe am treffendsten beschreiben?
