Gemeinhin werden Infektionen als bedrohlich empfunden, besonders wenn sie gehäuft auftreten und die Ursache unbekannt ist. Weniger geläufig ist, dass nur unter ein Prozent der bekannten Bakterien, Viren, Pilze oder Parasiten den Menschen krank machen können. Wenn diese uns infizieren, bemerken wir das meist nicht. Unbemerkte Infektionen sind aber lebenswichtig, weil sie im Kindesalter die angeborenen Abwehrsysteme in Gang setzen. Dabei formt sich ein Abwehr-Gedächtnis aus, das dann der lebenslangen Ertüchtigung durch Infektionen oder Impfungen bedarf, um uns vor Krankheit zu schützen.
