Im antiken Griechenland und Rom wollte und sollte derjenige, der es zu
etwas gebracht hatte, nicht arbeiten: Müßiggang galt als Ideal. Demgegenüber wird im jüdisch-christlich geprägten Kulturraum Arbeit hochgeschätzt - als Mittel zum Broterwerb, aber auch als Ausdruck der Persönlichkeit: Arbeit ist lebensnotwendig und gut! Nicht minder lebensnotwendig und gut ist Ruhe. Seit ca. 3000 Jahren folgt deshalb der Lebensrhythmus von Juden, Christen und Muslimen dem Wechsel von sechs Tagen Arbeit und einem Tag Ruhe - eine oft für selbstverständlich gehaltene kulturelle Grundlage Europas. Erst die moderne Industriegesellschaft unterläuft diesen Rhythmus schleichend und stellt ihn explizit in Frage.
