Die Modernisierung der letzten dreißig Jahre hat aus einem zu 80 Prozent von Bauern bewohnten China die verlängerte Werkbank der Welt gemacht. Beschaulich anmutende Städte sind zu Metropolen geworden, die miteinander wetteifern, die Hauptstädte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts, New York oder Chicago, in den Schatten zu stellen. Doch hat dieser Prozess tiefgreifende gesellschaftliche Verwerfungen mit sich gebracht.
Als Heilmittel dagegen ruft man seit neuestem traditionelle chinesische Werte aus. Der lange verfemte Konfuzius ist plötzlich in aller Munde. Doch vertragen sich Tradition und Moderne in China wirklich? Dieser Frage geht der Vortrag nach.
Prof. Dr. Hans van Ess lehrt Sinologie an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München; seit 2007 ist er deren Vizepräsident. Er hat u. a. eine Reihe von Arbeiten zum Konfuzianismus vorgelegt.
