Mozart erschloss sich ihm spät, Beethoven blieb ihm fremd, Schubert nahm er nicht zur Kenntnis und Mendelssohn blieb ihm zeitlebens der Götterliebling und ausübende Musiker - und doch war die Musik seit seiner Kindheit für Goethe eine das Leben bestimmende Macht. Wie weit die Goethesche Ratlosigkeit gegenüber der Musik ging, soll an Beispielen erzählt und überprüft werden.
