Multiresistent TB and HIV – we have to unarm the time bomb
The tuberculosis situations in the successor states of the former Soviet Union
and in Africa are converging. In Eastern Europe the still increasing prevalence of
MDR strains used to be the main issue. But now the rates of TB and HIV coinfections
are rising in that region, as well. In Africa HIV used to be the main challenge
and paved the way for TB coinfection. In addition, researchers in South
Africa recently reported the emergence of even totally drug resistant TB strains
(TDRs).
In October 2007, health ministers of the WHO Euro Region committed themselves
in the Berlin Declaration on Tuberculosis to fight tuberculosis. However,
the situation of tuberculosis control in parts of Eastern Europe and Africa is still
alarming.
The Koch-Metschnikow-Forum wants to point to the current problems and
deficits, but also to highlight successful initiatives to fight MDR-TB and to seek
political, financial and scientific support for them. Representatives from high
burden countries will report the current TB control situation in their respective
countries.

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).
If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
