Päivi Lappalainen ist Professorin für Finnische Literatur an der Universität Turku. Zu ihren Forschungsschwerpunkten gehören die Finnische Literatur zwischen 1880 und 1890, rezeptionstheoretische Untersuchungen zu den 1920er und 1930er Jahren, die kulturellen Implikationen von Krankheit im sich modernisierenden Finnland sowie verschiedene Fragen der Genderproblematik. Päivi Lappalainen ist zudem Prodekanin der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Turku.
