In the debate on policies for protecting biodiversity and providing ecosystem services there is a bias towards market-based policy instruments as the – at least ‘theoretically’ – most efficient solution. However, other aspects beyond efficiency are often neglected: How equitable are market-based instruments for ecosystem services and how well accepted are they in society? How do they perform in complex political-administrative systems? And how are the political struggles and discourses shaped which surround their introduction and implementation?
At 13 and 14 March 2012, the Research Group on Ecosystem Services, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the Social-ecological Research (SÖF) programme, organises an international workshop in Berlin in which, among others, five distinguished keynote speakers will address these questions. The Call for Papers is available at http://www.oekosystemleistungen.de/aktuelles/cfp-mbi-beyond-efficiency, and abstracts can be submitted till 16 September 2011.
