Tackling the Europe Question: US Foreign Policy in the lead up to the Presidential Elections

A keynote by Kim Holmes (The Heritage Foundation) followed by a discussion with Jackson Janes (Johns Hopkins University) and Martin Thunert (Heidelberg Center for American Studies). Chair and moderation by Andrea Römmele.

Gearing towards the 2012 presidential election, issues at the forefront of the candidential debates include the economy, trade, unemployment, healthcare and foreign affairs. As discussions on intervention, security and defence become increasingly pertinent on both sides of the Atlantic, a key question to explore is how relevant the European perspective is in the lead up to the next US election. In recent years US Foreign Policy has shifted its focus further eastwards towards Asia and the Pacific with Europe being deemed less of a political and economic force to be reckoned with. What does the future of US-Europe relations look like and how will this relationship have to change in the face of new global challenges? To which extent does Europe risk losing
its relevance on the global playing field in the wake of this shift from transatlantic to trans-pacific relations?

These and other questions will be addressed by Kim Holmes in a keynote speech on Tackling the European Question. Holmes‘ talk will be followed by a discussion with Jackson Janes and Martin Thunert, chaired and moderated by Andrea Römmele.

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
