Der Anteil der Frauen in der Forschung liegt europaweit bei rund 30 Prozent, in Deutschland liegt der Anteil der Wissenschaftlerinnen bei nur 21 Prozent. Die sogenannte „leaky pipeline“ beginnt schon nach dem Studienabschluss. Sind Frauen bis zum Studiumende noch mit 51 Prozent in der Forschung vertreten, so geht die Schere danach zwischen Männern und Frauen immer weiter auf. So sind beispielsweise nur noch rund 12 Prozent der höchstdotierten Professorenstellen mit Frauen besetzt.
Die Debatte wird sowohl auf europäischer als auch auf nationaler Ebene geführt. Vom 19.-20. März 2012 findet in Stuttgart dazu die europäische Abschlusskonferenz statt. Das Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum veranstaltet als Partner von GENDERA diese Konferenz und ist verantwortlich für deren Konzeption, Organisation und Durchführung.
