Die in der Operngeschichte einmalige Kooperation zwischen Hugo von Hofmannsthal und Richard Strauss begann mit der Tragödie „Elektra“ (1909) und endete mit der Komödie „Arabella“ (1933, vier Jahre nach dem Tod Hofmannsthals uraufgeführt). Die sechs Opern, die Dichter und Komponist in zwei Jahrzehnten schufen, durchmessen das ganze Gattungsspektrum zwischen mythologischer Tragödie und musikalischer Gesellschaftskomödie. Das Podiumsgespräch zwischen Dieter Borchmeyer und Siegfried Mauser befasst sich exemplarisch mit "Elektra", „Rosenkavalier“, „Ariadne auf Naxos“ (als Vermittlungsspiel zwischen Mythos und Gesellschaftskomödie) sowie „Frau ohne Schatten“.
