VORTRAG (in englischer Sprache): John Meyer "Cultural Contradictions of Post-Capitalism"

Öffentlicher Vortrag im Rahmen der von Prof. Dr. Heinz Bude (Hamburger Institut für Sozialforschung), Prof. Dr. Anita Engels (Universität Hamburg) und Prof. Dr. Georg Krücken (Universität Kassel) geplanten nicht öffentlichen Tagung „Daniel Bell als Theoretiker der Gegenwartsgesellschaft“ (7. bis 8. Juni 2012, Hamburg)

To intellectuals rooted in political economy, a continuing surprise was the rise of a huge middle class. One conception (clear in the work of Bell) was that this represented a stabilizing balance against conflict and domination. But in later, more economistic thinking, the expanding middle class reflected a natural and functional economic progression toward a post-industrial economy. And indeed, in much social theory (including Bell) it came to be seen as if it the school teacher and the psychiatrist were economically functional. From this point of view, the expansion in human self-expression and empowerment was a natural functional development involving education, information, and complex processing. But from the earlier pluralist point of view, much of it was dangerously destabilizing, irrational and post-modern in the worst sense. Bell shifted back and forth. A core intellectual problem here lies in the over-expanded contemporary conception of the "economic." A second related core problem lies in excessively narrow conceptions of the political and of the religious and cultural cosmologies of a globalizing era. The society of rationalized organization transcends the economy, and depends heavily on a knowledge system with religious-like functions.
