„Who Wears It God Help Him“ - Byzantine Jewellery from Serbia (13th - 15th century)

From the late 12th century Serbian culture, arts and crafts especially, relied on Byzantine models and its inheritance. In jewellery production the return to earlier Byzantine patterns is obvious, although they are somewhat modified. At the same time, the use of new types and decorative patterns originating in central and western Europe can be seen.

This combination of Byzantine and Romanic-Gothic elements, which is generally a feature of the art of the Mediterranean from the 13th to the 15th century, became a main characteristic of Serbian jewellery as well. However, due to some original solutions in the transformation of traditional elements, a completely new aesthetic of jewellery was created, in written documents known as ad modum Sclavicum, 'in a Serbian manner'.

Dieser Vortrag findet anlässlich des "WisseschaftsCampus Mainz: Byzanz zwischen Orient und Okzident" statt.
