Mit Pierre Boulez als erstem Preisträger wird einer der »konsequentesten, intellektuell schärfsten, schöpferisch präzisesten Vertreter« der Musik nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg ausgezeichnet, heißt es in der Begründung der Jury. Boulez sei dabei »Komponist, Dirigent, Denker in Tönen, Musiktheoretiker, homme de lettres«.
Mit dem Robert Schumann-Preis für Dichtung und Musik zeichnet die Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur in Mainz Persönlichkeiten für ein herausragendes Lebenswerk auf dem Gebiet der Dichtung und der Musik aus. Der Preis ist mit 25.000,- € dotiert und wird alle zwei Jahre vergeben.
