Studies of magnetically confined plasmas - Antrittsvorlesung von Prof. Dr. Thomas Sunn Pedersen

Im Rahmen des Greifswalder Physikalischen Kolloquiums hält Professor Dr. Thomas Sunn Pedersen vom IPP Greifswald seine Antrittsvorlesung, zu der wir alle Interessierten sehr herzlich einladen. Das Vortragsthema lautet "Studies of magnetically confined plasmas - motivated by curiosity and the desire to develop fusion energy".

Abstract: This talk will give an overview of research I have done within the field of plasma physics, as well as a brief outlook on my future research plans. My research has focused on magnetic confinement of fully ionized plasmas. In tokamaks and stellarators (the two most promising magnetic confinement concepts for fusion), the physics of the edge region is very important: the edge region can have a large and sometimes decisive effect on the global confinement of a plasma. The edge of the plasma is also the interface with material objects. This interface must be carefully controlled to ensure that the core plasma stays hot and clean, and the plasma facing components do not overheat or erode. I will describe highlights from research I have done in Denmark (Risø National Lab) and USA (MIT) on edge plasmas as well as my current and future involvement in Wendelstein 7-X here in Greifswald - which is also focused on the physics of the edge plasma. I will also present examples from research I have done to understand magnetically confined non-neutral plasmas. This was largely curiosity driven research, with only indirect relevance to fusion. The work was done in a small stellarator I built at Columbia University. The confinement and stability of pure electron plasmas was studied, as well as plasmas of an arbitrary degree of neutralization - an experimental scan between two extremes: That of pure electron plasmas (completely non-neutral) and that of quasineutral plasmas (where the positive and negative charges balance almost exactly). I will also talk about future plans for the first creation and studies of matter-antimatter (electron-positron) plasmas on Earth.

Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
