The welfare state is a European invention with global reach. While the welfare state has historically evolved into different forms in Europe, we are witnessing its globalization. Alongside this process, social policy innovations appear in emerging economies. At the same time, the global financial crisis and demographic changes put both, established and emerging welfare states, under severe stress. Therefore, the future financial and political sustainability of welfare states is prominent on the agenda of decision-makers.
The Hertie School is proud to welcome a number of renowned and distinguished scholars of welfare state studies at the Symposium “Varieties of Welfare States: Europe – Asia”. These experts will discuss the historical development and the current status and challenges of welfare states in Europe and Asia. Their focus will be on the region, in which we find the historical origin of welfare states, and the region of a spectacular economic miracle in recent decades, particularly China and South Korea. Within Europe, the “Nordic model” has recently attracted special attention, and is a topic which has been at the core of Professor Stein Kuhnle’s research interests.
