“Climate Engineering Governance – Different Perspectives from Around the World”

Climate Engineering – large-scale intentional interventions into the global climate system to counteract some aspects of global climate change – until recently has failed to gain traction in the mainstream scientific community. But with little progress on climate change policy and rising global emissions of greenhouse gases, climate engineering is increasingly entering scientific and political discussions around the world.

From 22nd to 24th of May 2013, the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) is convening a three day conference on the challenges that climate engineering raises for ethics as a discipline. The goal of the conference is not to evaluate climate engineering from a particular normative perspective, but rather to identify important challenges raised by climate engineering, and to search for ways to best deal with these challenges:

• How applicable are our normative theories to problems raised by climate engineering, e.g. uncertainties, complex processes and large scale and long lasting effects?
• What do different normative approaches bring to bear on the various ethical aspects of climate engineering, and for which aspects do we lack plausible normative approaches?

The conference does not aim at providing a solution, but rather focuses on clarifying the agenda for future research in climate ethics with respect to climate engineering. In doing so, we hope to bundle future research on normative aspects of climate engineering and to create a network of researchers dedicated to this task.

In the course of the conference there will also be the possibility to discuss challenges and problems of the governance of climate engineering research, as well as possible deployments, with leading experts in normative theory, environmental ethics and legal studies from different parts of the world (e.g. Europe, USA, Australia, Asia). The public round table discussion on “Climate Engineering Governance – Different Perspectives from Around the World” will take place on May 23rd, 2013 from 6.30pm to 8pm.

The background of the conference and the round table discussion is the interdisciplinary climate engineering research microcosm of the IASS cluster Sustainable Interactions with the Atmosphere (SIWA).

Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
