Ausgehend von Goethes Beschäftigung mit China wird der Begriff des Mandarin, des literarisch gebildeten und innerlich unabhängigen Begleiters aufgeklärter Herrschaft, in den Mittelpunkt gestellt. In der seither erfolgten Umdeutung des Mandarin-Begriffs spiegeln sich Veränderungen im Selbstverständnis und in der Funktion gebildeter Eliten und zeigt sich die Verschiebung von Werthorizonten.
