Three-dimensional complex plasmonic structures: Chirality, Coupling, and Sensing

Innerhalb des Physikalischen Kolloquiums hält Professor Dr. Harald Giessen, Universität Stuttgart, am 12. Dezember einen Vortrag zum Thema "Three-dimensional complex plasmonic structures: Chirality, Coupling, and Sensing".

Referent: Prof. Dr. Harald Giessen, 4. Physikalisches Institut, Universität Stuttgart

Abstrakt: Metallic metamaterials have shown a number of fascinating properties over the last few years. A negative refractive index, negative refraction, superlenses, and optical cloaking are some of the ambitious applications where metamaterials hold great promise. We are going to present fabrication methods for the manufacturing of 3D metamaterials [1]. We are investigating their coupling properties and the resulting optical spectra. Hybridization of the electric as well as the magnetic resonances allows us to easily understand the complex optical properties [2]. Lateral as well as vertical coupling can result in Fano-resonances [3] and EIT-like phenomena [4]. These phenomena allow construction novel LSPR sensors with a figure of merit as high as five [5]. Nanooptics can also aid antenna-enhanced hydrogen sensing [6] and sensitive nonlinear optical nanoantenna-enhanced pump-probe experiments that detect mechanoplasmonic oscillations [7]. Additionally, more complex structures can act as 3D plasmon rulers [8]. The connection between structural symmetry and their electric as well as magnetic dipole and higher-order multipole coupling will be elucidated. It turns out that stereometamaterials [9], where the spatial arrangement of the constituents is varied, reveal a highly complex rotational dispersion. Combining local plasmonic field enhancement with magnetooptical materials can give the possibility to enahance Faraday rotation and might lead the way towards thin-film large-area Faraday isolators [10], see figure to the right.

Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
