Hertie Lecture in Brain Research with Karl Deisseroth (Stanford)

First Hertie Lecture in Brain Research

"Optical deconstruction of fully-assembled biological systems"
Professor Karl Deisseroth, Stanford University

January 20, 2014,
starting at 6:15 p.m.
in the Audimax Tübingen
followed by a reception.

The Hertie Institute of Clinical Brain Research invites you to the first Hertie Lecture in Brain Research. The Lecture will be given by Professor Karl Deisseroth, Stanford University. His lecture is entitled "Optical deconstruction of fully-assembled biological systems".

Deisseroths work is focused on developing and applying methods for studying intact biological systems with fine spatiotemporal resolution, and high molecular and genetic specificity. In developing optogenetics between 2004 and 2013, he and his team integrated genetics and optics to enable experimental gain- or loss-of-function of well-defined events in specific cell-types within intact systems, using genes taken from evolutionarily distant organisms such as algae and archaebacteria. Since his transduction of microbial opsins into neurons in 2004, Deisseroths applications of his technologies have spanned from basic work on motivated behavior to disease-focused work on Parkinsonism, anxiety, social dysfunction, depression, and other neuropsychiatric diseases.

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
