Doing business or finding a job in Saudi Arabia are more challenging for women, especially due to cultural and tradition norms. However, certain trends have fostered women to take on more active roles in the Kingdom. For example in family businesses as female family members become shareholders via inheritance, they will tend to request a role in the governance and oversight of the business. Similar developements can be found in the education and health sector, where women have reached leadership positions.
Dr Basmah M. Omair is CEO of the Khadijah Bint Khuwailed Center at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The center is lobbying for the economic empowerment of women in Saudi Arabia. Dr Omair worked on many regulatory reforms that came into effect recently allowing women’s increased participation in national development in many different
sectors. Prior to her current post, Dr Omair was a Consultant for the American University in Washington DC and the Global Peace Organization, evaluating the education system in Iraq.
