EXPO 2015 Milano showcases concrete answers to a vital need: being able to guarantee healthy, safe and sufficient food for everyone, while respecting the Planet and its equilibrium. A core issue which has to be addressed in respect is the massive amount of food that is wasted every year. In fact, we face a situation where on a global scale about one third of the food produced for human consumption annually – that is about 1.3 billion tones – is never eaten! The global food wastage has severe environmental consequences such as for the climate, water and land use as well as biodiversity. Germany´s food losses alone cause about four percent of the country´s total greenhouse gas emissions.
Against this background and amidst the inspiring atmosphere of EXPO 2015 in Milano, we warmly invite you to a science & environmental policy dialogue on necessary and most promising steps forward to achieve a sustainable reduction of food waste and loss. The event brings together representatives from the European Commission, the United Nations Environment Program, the German, Swiss and Austrian competent authorities as well as experts from science and civil society to discuss key measures and provisions for preventing food waste. The event moreover will feature the screening of the movie “taste the waste” in presence of director Valentin Thurn.
