Matthias Neubert studierte Physik, Mathematik und Chemie an der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. Nach seiner Promotion habilitierte er sich 1993 in Heidelberg über ›Heavy-quark Symmetry‹. Von 1993 bis 1998 war er als Staff Scientist am CERN-Teilchenbeschleuniger in Genf, von 1999 bis 2006 Professor für Physik an der Cornell University in Ithaca, USA tätig. Seit 2006 ist er Professor für Theoretische Physik mit dem Spezialgebiet Theorie der Elementarteilchen an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, wo er das Exzellenzcluster PRISMA koordiniert und das Mainz Institute for Theoretical Physics leitet.
