It was on the 19th of September 1991 whilst hiking in South Tyrol that Erika and Helmut Simon stumbled upon the remains of the more than 5,300 years old glacier mummy “Ötzi”. Today the man from the ice is the most widely-studied corpse in the world. His entire genome has been decoded, his appearance reconstructed, and the contents of his stomach have been investigated. It has been possible for experts to establish that he had bad teeth and even that he suffered from lactose intolerance. An entire generation of researchers have been preoccupied with the circumstances of his life and death. At the international Mummy Congress in Bozen/Bolzano which on the 25th anniversary of this discovery is dedicated solely to Ötzi, scientists from all over the world will be presenting their latest discoveries.
