Synthetische Oligonukleotide oder Peptide, die Zielmoleküle spezifisch binden - sogenannte Aptamere - sind seit Jahren wichtige Werkzeuge für die molekularbiologische Forschung. In der letzten Zeit zeichnen sich auch interessante Anwendungen in Biotechnologie, Pharmaindustrie und Medizin ab, wobei Aptamere zur Aufreinigung von Produkten, in der Analytik und Diagnostik oder als Medikamente eingesetzt werden können. Mit Pegaptanib ist bereits ein Aptamer zur Behandlung der feuchten altersbedingten Makuladegeneration (AMD) auf dem Markt.
