Spiritual Care is an elemental part of religious life. The call for
qualified chaplaincy for Europe’s Muslim population is on the increase.
In Europe as well as in other Western and Muslim countries
new pastoral and ethical concepts, theories and approaches
need to be developed in accordance to the societal situation. It
is recognized that this should be achieved through the analysis
of traditional Muslim pastoral counselling and ethics as well as in
confrontation with present intellectual discourses.
Since 2016, the Center for Islamic Theology at the Eberhard-
Karls-Universität Tübingen offers a Master’s degree in “Practical
Islamic Theology for Spiritual Care and Social Work”. In July
2017, the Center holds an international conference on Islamic
Spiritual Care and Ethics in Modern Contexts. It wants to offer
a platform to compare, reflect and discuss the situation and the
developments of contemporary Muslim Spiritual Care and Ethics
in various European and other Western and Muslim countries.
The following issues will be addressed
• Differences and similarities of the respective experiences in Europe, the
USA and the Muslim World;
• Is there a concept of common Muslim ethics and/or do Muslims need a
new (common) concept of ethics, for instance in the areas of medicine
and social life?
• Which methods of Islamic counselling are in use and what kind of
challenges exist in different contexts that we are facing?
• How can Muslim intellectuals benefit from the interdisciplinary and interreligious
research in these fields to develop new, innovative approaches
and paradigms for ethics?
