Electricity will play a crucial role for reaching the EU climate goals. To match the increasing electricity demand, the share of intermittent renewables will rise. This will create new challenges for the electricity supply system. Market regulations will need to offer incentives for reserve capacities, energy storage as well as demand response management. At the same time, the European electricity market is expanding, offering new possibilities to enhance delivery reliability and balancing the electricity load across borders.
We would like to discuss with you the following questions: What are the options of the EU to support its member states to foster European cooperation in the electricity sector and to create a stable and reliable electricity system? How effective are the mechanisms proposed by the European Commission in the Winter Package “Clean Energy for All Europeans”?
At the seminar, we will debate the challenges to maintain a secure and reliable electricity system while reaching high ambitions on renewable production, focussing in particular on the perspectives from Germany and Sweden.
