Ethics in Science Lecture by Sarah Chan (University of Edinburgh, UK)

It is my pleasure to invite you to the annual Ethics in Science Lecture on October 5, as of 4 pm (Location: our lecture hall), organized by the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research. This year’s speaker will be Dr. Sarah Chan (University of Edinburgh Centre for Biomedicine Self and Society, UK). She will discuss the implications of human germline editing in the era of Crispr/CAS. Her talk is titled: "Toward a Global Germline Ethics: Facing humanity's genome-edited future?”.

The image on the invitation card is a watercolor by Ludwig Meidner, a “degenerate artist” persecuted during the Nazi Germany. In 1939 he left Germany, a few days before the outbreak of World War II. During his exile in England he felt largely isolated and ignored and was depressed by the lack of recognition as an artist. The watercolor is undated, but was probably created in 1942. At this time, a number of partly humorous, partly grotesque watercolors were created. These scenes, representing a kind of absurd world theater, are partly very cryptic. This work of art originates from the artist’s estate, which the Jewish Museum has acquired in 1994.

Short bio
Sarah Chan is a Chancellor’s Fellow working in interdisciplinary bioethics at the Usher Institute for Population Health Sciences and Informatics, and Co-Director of the Mason Institute for Medicine, Life Sciences and Law, University of Edinburgh. Previously, from 2005 to 2015, she was a Research Fellow in Bioethics at the University of Manchester, first at the Centre for Social Ethics and Policy and from 2008 the Institute for Science Ethics and Innovation. Sarah’s research focuses on the ethics of new biomedical technologies, including stem cell and embryo research; reproductive medicine; synthetic biology; gene therapy and genetic modification; and human and animal enhancement. Her current work draws on these interests to explore the ethics of emerging modes of biomedicine at the interface of health care research, medical treatment and consumer medicine including population-level health and genetic data research; the use of biomaterials in both research and treatment; and access to experimental treatments and medical innovation.
