The claim that the framework of common transatlantic values and rules is currently under threat is widespread. Yet what does this assertion actually mean? On what shared political beliefs and institutions is this “community of values” based? Does this community still exist? If so, what might the future of its beliefs and institutions be? These questions, focusing on the values of transatlantic institutions and their practical expression in international and domestic politics, will be discussed by a panel of distinguished experts:
Mitchell Ash (moderator), Professor Emeritus of Modern History at the University of Vienna and member of the BBAW. Ash was previously Professor of History at the University of Iowa, and has held visiting appointments at the Free University of Berlin, University of California at Berkeley, and Princeton University.
Gerhard Casper, President Emeritus of Stanford University and American Academy in Berlin trustee. A legal scholar, Casper is a senior fellow at both the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford and the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.
Anne-Marie Descôtes, French Ambassador to Germany. A career diplomat, Descôtes has worked on EU Affairs in Brussels and Washington, among others, and most recently served as Director-General for Global Affairs, Culture, Education and International Development.
Klaus von Dohnanyi, former Governor of Hamburg, Federal Minister of Education and Science, and Member of the German Bundestag. A graduate of Yale Law School and former coeditor of the Yale Law Journal, von Dohnanyi is a member of Atlantik-Brücke and the German Council on Foreign Affairs. He was also an employee of Ford Motor Company (Dearborn & Cologne).
Christopher R. Hill, Chief Advisor to the Chancellor for Global Engagement and Professor of the Practice in Diplomacy at the University of Denver. A career diplomat and four-time ambassador, Hill also served as US Assistant Secretary for East Asia, during which he headed the US delegation to the Six Party Talks on North Korea.
