Polymer reaction engineering (PRE) is a highly dynamic scientific field with vivid interfaces to various disciplines within academia, industry and economics. The workshop wants to trigger the development of polymer reaction engineering concepts to address the demands and expectations of economy and society with respect to improving the efficiency of energy, materials and investment for polymer manufacturing. Existing polymerisation processes have to be improved constantly and new processes have to be designed to fulfil customer demands. The almost universal variety of applications from coatings over functional materials for construction, for wearables or electronic devices to additive manufacturing requires continuous progress in product and process design. This means the design of new catalysts and the study of their kinetic and thermodynamic behaviour to find and optimise polymerisation reactions. Scientific knowledge then has to evolve into process technologies enabling economic, robust and safe production.
Among many other developments and implications, increased precision in tailoring polymers continue to fuel progress in PRE. The workshop also benefits substantially from process analytics and the rapidly increasing abilities in modelling and simulation (and thereby control) of processes in the general area of reaction engineering.
