For over one hundred years, medical doctors and basic scientists have sought to understand the fundamental principles underlying cardiac arrhythmias. Their research has been driven by a tremendous medical need: cardiac arrhythmias have been the major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide with sudden cardiac death taking hundred thousands of lives every year. According to recent data from the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are the most significant medical challenge of the 21st century.
Despite decades of research, however, fundamental scientific questions remain unanswered. Fifty years ago, it was postulated that cardiac arrhythmias are driven by vortex-like rotating waves inside the heart. Understanding the dynamics of these waves and their molecular underpinnings would answer the questions why and when arrhythmias occur and how they might be cured. This seminal and highly influential theoretical and experimental work has inspired generations of basic scientists and clinicians. This conference brings together leading scientists in the field that will that will provide exciting insights into the quest to understand and treat cardiac arrhythmias, from basic research of pattern formation in excitable media to promising first clinical applications.
