Definitions of “youth” and “participation” are subject to constant change. The term youth usually refers to those between the ages of 15 and 29. Depending on the social context and cultural or economic characteristics of their communities or regions of origin, the possibilities for these individuals and their roles in society differ. In other words, being young in the rural areas of Bolivia means something different from being young in Madrid's city centre.
The participation of young people in politics and society is also very diverse in form and content, even if it is primarily a matter of changing both individual and collective living conditions. Examples are the movement “Fridays for Future,” the youth protests of 2011/2012 in the Arab world, as well as today’s protests in Central America for a better environment or the protection of human rights and democracy. However, “adult society” perceives youth protests less as a sign of political commitment than as a threat to stability.
To discuss these issues, the EU-LAC Foundation and the GIGA are organising the international seminar “Youth and Citizenship in the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean” on 24 and 25 September 2019. Scientists and practitioners as well as representatives of public institutions and youth organisations in the EU, Latin America, and the Caribbean will discuss the challenges, opportunities, and deficits in the active participation of young people in politics and society.
