Open Lecture: “Sound and the City” by Banu Cicek Tülü

Invitation for the Open Lectures Series Spring 2020 at the Berlin International University of Applied Sciences

The Open Lecture on the 10th of March: “Sound and the City” by Banu Cicek Tülü proposes sound as a participatory tool in urban research and will focus on various methods to include sound into the urban design process while involving the artistic practice that employs sound in urban space.

Every city sounds different. Acoustic contamination and sound environment is not only a question of noise pollution caused by traffic or industrial and daily activities, but rather about understanding the auditory experiences and discovering the sonic territories in urban space. There is a tendency in contemporary urban and architectural projects to design not only visually also considering other elements i.e. acoustic qualities (or light, smell, etc.) via perception of the users. It is important to understand, those elements require further research strategies than measurements and laboratory work.

BI Open Lectures is a series of talks from professionals from the fields of architecture and design, mostly related to the teaching at Berlin International University of Applied Sciences. The talks are free to the public.
