The Archaeological Conference of Central Germany is hosted annually by the State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology Saxony-Anhalt. Based on finds or findings from Central Germany, the international conference addresses selected archaeological topics in order to contribute new insights into the interdisciplinary discussion.
Within the framework of this year's congress, archaeologists, ethnologists, historians and philologists, among others, will address the interplay of time and power. The starting point for these considerations is the Nebra Sky Disc. The astronomical and calendric knowledge encoded on this UNESCO Memory of the World allows us to draw far-reaching conclusions about the social structures of the Early Bronze Age in Central Germany. Using numerous other examples form the Palaeolithic to modern times and from various cultures worldwide, the conference will present different time concepts, calendars and celestial images as well as cosmologies based on astronomical observation. The discussion will be focussed on whether, and to what extent, the determination of time and chronology, which is based on monopolized knowledge, is related to the legitimation of power.
