How much open and how much closed? The Black Sea from the 15th till the 18th century

Online-Veranstaltung im Rahmen der Ringvorlesung des GWZO im Sommersemester 2021: »Menschen, Wissen, Waren: Die Schwarzmeerregion als Kooperations- und Konfliktraum 1453–2014«

Prof. Dr. Dariusz Kołodziejczyk (Warschau): How much open and how
much closed? The Black Sea from the 15th till the 18th century

The Black Sea has often been compared to an »Ottoman lake«, especially in the years 1475-1774, between the conquest of the southern Crimea by Sultan Mehmed II, and the advent of Russia of Catherine II in the late eighteenth century. Some foreigners even compared it to the harem, which the sultan jealously guarded against foreign intruders. However, the Ottoman domination was repeatedly challenged by the rivaling states to the north of the sea, and even more by local inhabitants who developed semi-state structures, especially the Cossacks and the Nogays.

Dariusz Kołodziejczyk is Professor of Early Modern History at the Univerity of Warsaw and at the Polish Academy of Sciences. He has published extensively on the Ottoman Empire, the Crimean Khanate, and the contacts between Central-Eastern Europe and Asia, and his interests also extend to imperial frontiers and global history.
